Theory of Knowledge Language I Learned from the Video
Plato’s Definition of Knowing: When s is “someone” and p is “proposition”. For s to know p:
p has to be justified
p has to be true
s has to believe that p is true
The 3 types of knowledge:
ØImpersonal Propositional Knowledge
o This is knowledge by description
ØPersonal Knowledge
o This is knowledge by conviction, introspection, acquaintance and practice
ØSubconscious Knowledge
o This is knowledge by instinct
The 3 Theories:
o Correspondence Theory: When the future is determined according to past results.
o Pragmatic Theory: This is based on a person’s knowledge, what you know can justify your beliefs.
o Coherence Theory: This theory is based upon three truth tests, easily summarised as PIE. Public Independent Eternal. If all 3 truth tests are ‘yes’ then there is a Universal Truth
The Universal Truth: this is a permanent fact, it is true to the public, no matter where you are.
Paradigm: “A model/ conceptual system for understanding experience. They are formed using concepts and enable us to organise experience”.
Justification: This is when one appeals to something other than what is being supported. The justification has to be relevant as well as true. It needs to have clear language and respect the principles of logic
Human Experience: This is the product of
o The external world
o Constructed Environment
o The social, cultural and personal filter we have acquired over the course of our lives.
